Jiménez et al conducted a qualitative study to understand to better understand the perspectives of Black and Latinx communities regarding COVID-19 mitigation behaviours. The sample consisted of Black and Latinx individuals from four counties in New Jersey. A total 111 individuals were interviewed with 78.4% being women and the median age being 43 years. The interviews consisted of 13 group interviews and 8 individual interviews. Two key themes emerged from the interviews: the devasting effects of the pandemic motivated intense information seeking and mitigation behaviours and testing, even within that context vaccine skepticism was high. Two major limitations of the study were that the research team was not able to establish prevalence of beliefs or behaviours within the sample and that the sample was primarily recruited from largely urban counties. The study’s findings argue for greater efforts to reduce logistical barriers for marginalized communities and greater transparency in providing information to address vaccine skepticism.
