Patterson et al. conducted an epidemiological survey from March to May 2020 among cats and dogs living in Italy in SARS-CoV-2 positive households, geographic areas that were severely affected by COVID-19, or geographical areas that were the most convenient. A total of 540 dogs and 277 cats were included in the study and oropharyngeal, nasal, and/or rectal swabs were collected. Sera was available for 388 dogs and 152 cats. All 839 swab samples were negative by real-time PCR, but SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies were detected in 3.35% (n=13) of dogs and 3.95% (n=6) of cats. There was a positive trend between the number of dogs testing positive for neutralizing antibodies and the recorded burden of human disease. A similar trend was seen in cats, but few sampled provinces met the criteria for analysis. Findings suggest that companion animals can be infected, and dogs in particular warrant further investigation regarding SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility.
